Alumni Spotlight: Michael Wilson’s Journey from Service to Success

This month we caught up with Michael Wilson, a 2024–2025 Â鶹ÊÓƵ Bay Area Team Leader. Now a Legal Assistant at Sanford Heisler and Head Coach of Undergraduate Mock Trial at Stanford, Michael reflects on the lessons and relationships that made his Â鶹ÊÓƵ experience so meaningful – and how it continues to shape his path today.

Q: What made you want to sign up for Â鶹ÊÓƵ in the first place?
A: I was drawn to a year of service because of the impact members can have in their communities. The chance to promote education and help students grow felt like a unique and rewarding way to give back.

Q: What are some of your first memories of your Â鶹ÊÓƵ experience?
A: Getting to know the rest of the Corps! From day one, forming bonds with my fellow AmeriCorps members was a blast. Sharing our stories and reasons for serving gave me even more motivation to make a difference. And I’ll never forget our ropes course day – it was the perfect mix of teamwork and fun!

Q: During your time with Â鶹ÊÓƵ, what training or experiences prepared you for your career journey?
A: One of the most valuable experiences was our professional development day at LinkedIn. Learning how to build our networks and strengthen our digital presence was incredibly useful – and the year of LinkedIn Premium access still pays off!

Q: What did you learn during your experience that was new or surprising to you?
A: I learned how powerful a committed team can be in inspiring students and creating change. At Belle Haven, Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s ability to become part of the school culture and serve as a positive force was unmatched. Every member took their role as mentor and role model seriously, and through programs like SIPPs, we saw just how much of an impact we could make.

Q: What was your favorite thing about your Â鶹ÊÓƵ experience?
A: All the little moments. Whether helping a student read a few more sentences or laughing with staff in the lounge, those everyday interactions meant the most. They built lasting friendships and reminded me how meaningful this work is – not just for the students, but for us too.

Q: What advice would you give to young adults considering a year of service with Â鶹ÊÓƵ?
A: Take the leap! It’s hard work, but it’s incredibly fulfilling. You might make less than a traditional job, but spending every day with students – seeing their growth and joy – is ten times more rewarding. I still miss being at school every day!
